Congratulations Mairead!

MHS Indoor Track Success at Nationals

The following post is reprinted from Superintendent Mary Gormley's blog, published on 3/14/16 at

Ten Wildcats travelled to NYC this past weekend to compete in the New Balance Indoor Nationals. From left: Alexis Belash, Alexis Daly, David Perkins, Koby Osazee, Smith Charles, Derek Perkins, Bridget Mitchell, Elise O’Leary, Colette O’Leary, Sophie Cousineau and Coach Tom Shaw.
It was a very exciting weekend for our Indoor Track Teams. Both teams left Milton High School on Friday after a rousing send-off from our Boosters, administrators, parents, Milton Police Department, faculty and staff in the lobby.  The teams travelled to the Bronx for the New Balance Indoor National Championship and returned with an All-American title.
The boys’ team sent their record-holding 4×200 relay (David Perkins, Derek Perkins, Smith Charles and Koby Osazee) and one individual, Smith Charles, who competed in the Freshman 60 Meter Dash.
The girls sent two relay teams, a DMR (Distance Medley Relay) comprised of Sophie Cousineau, Colette O’Leary, Elise O’Leary and Bridget Mitchell; and a 4×800 relay with Alexis Belash Sophie Cousineau, Colette O’Leary and Elise O’Leary; along with one individual, Alexis Daly, who competed in the Freshman 60 meter dash on Sunday morning.
On Friday night, Milton girls’ DMR battled teams from Pennsylvania and Virginia to win their heat, shatter the school record (by 27 seconds) and ultimately place 9th overall at Nationals. Colette O’Leary, Sophie Cousineau, Elise O’Leary, and Bridget Mitchell (coming off a 6-week injury hiatus) each had to fight every step of the way during their legs to keep the team on pace. It was a remarkable thing to watch. Here is the video (just under 12 minutes)
On Saturday afternoon, the boys’ 4×200 relay team competed against the best in the country. Unfortunately, they did not advance past the semi-final heat, but if you watch the race, there is no doubt these boys gave it their all. See link below:
On Saturday evening, the girls 4×800 relay team of Ali Belash, Sophie Cousineau, Colette O’Leary and Elise O’Leary returned to the New York Armory.  Their qualifying time for this race put them in the “slower” heat and nobody (except themselves and Coach Shaw) expected to see much change in the rankings.  See for yourself what teamwork, discipline and mental toughness can do for an underdog team. Keep in mind that none of these girls have ever competed at the national level, and their anchor is a freshman!!  The team went on to place 6th, which has qualified them as All-Americans. An amazing achievement!
Our freshman boy Smith Charles, blazed his way through the qualifying heats to make it to the finals on Sunday afternoon. Running against the best 9th graders in the country, Smith earned second place in this race with a time of 7.03 Congratulations to Smith Charles!  Watch his race below:
Our freshman girl, Alexis Daly, also competed in the Freshman 60 meter race, placing 13th overall. Her time was a 7.94. This was an amazing effort in an extremely competitive field.  Great job, Alexis!
We are so proud of every one of these athletes, who have represented Milton High School and the Town of Milton so admirably.

All Americans!! The MHS Girls 4×800 relay team earned All-American status at this past weekend’s New Balance Indoor Nationals Championship. From left: Sophie Cousineau, Elise O’Leary, Colette O’Leary and Ali Belsh.

MHS Boys Indoor Track athlete Smith Charles placed second in the Freshmen 60 meter dash at the New Balance Indoor Nationals Championship in New York.

The MHS Girls Indoor Distance Medley Relay team placed 9th at New Balance Indoor National Championship. From left: Coach Tom Shaw, Elise O’Leary, Sophie Cousineau, Colette O’Leary and Bridget Mitchell.
