Student Leaders Support the New England Center for Homeless Veterans

Since September, the Milton High School Student Leaders have been working with the New England Center for Homeless Veterans (NECHV).  The Student Leaders have been supporting the Center's "Welcome Home" program.  The NECHV, located in downtown Boston, provides shelter for almost 400 veterans every night.  Each calendar year, over 300 veterans move out of the shelter and into their own, permanent housing.  Unfortunately, they often move in without the supplies necessary to start a home.  As part of the "Welcome Home" program, the NECHV receives donations of cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, linens, and other household goods to provide to the veterans as they transition into their new lives.

For the last month, the Student Leaders have been collecting donations from the students, parents, and teachers of the Milton High community.  The drive concluded this week, and it was an overwhelming success.  Members of the High School donated over 400 items that will be delivered to the Center in the coming weeks.

In return for their donations, students, parents, and teachers were given a black, paper dog tag to decorate in honor of a veteran in their lives.  These dog tags are currently on display in the main foyer of the High School.

The Student Leaders thank everyone who donated and/or supported the NECHV.

Bonne Fête de la Francophonie!

Four hundred French students celebrated the 2015 Fête de la Francophonie on Friday, March 27 in the Charles C. Winchester Auditorium auditorium of the Milton High School. All 280 French students from Milton High School and 120 of their peers from Taunton, Franklin and Westerly (RI) participated in the matinée. This event was jointly organized by the World Language Department of Milton High School and the French Consulate of Boston. The General Consul of France, Monsieur Fieschi, the General Consul of Canada, Monsieur Annable, as well as a representative from the Delegation of Quebec, were present.

Created by the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) in 1998, La Fête de la Francophonie is observed around the world every March to celebrate the French language and the diversity of the Francophone cultures. There are today about 274 million Francophones around the world. French is an official language in 33 countries on 5 continents. The highlight of the event was the film Sur le chemin de l’école (On the Way to School) offered as a premiere viewing to our students by the French Consulate in Boston.  This documentary, shot in Kenya, Morocco, Argentina and India, follows the long and often challenging journeys of four groups of children on their way to school. The winner of several international awards, the film will open in American theaters in the coming months.
