Update from the MHS Dramatics Society

The following post first appeared in Superintendent Gormley's March 20th E-blast:

The Milton High School Dramatics Society performed their interpretation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole at the preliminaries of the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s annual High School Drama Festival earlier this month. Directed by MHS juniors Garrett Sager and Amy Savino, Rabbit Hole is a sympathetic, realistic, and deeply moving treatment of how family members pick up the pieces after the tragic accidental death of a young child. Milton performed at Tewksbury High School against seven other schools, only three of which advanced to the semi-finals. Emily Dsida and Evy Oliverio both won acting awards, Emily for her portrayal of the range of bereaved mother Becca’s emotions and Evy for skillful comic relief as Izzy in what can otherwise be a very dark play. These awards thus make these two talented actors members of METG’s 2014 “All-Star Acting Troupe.”
Other cast members included Liam Halloran as grieving father Howie, Devan Callahan as Becca’s mother Nat, and Matt McAuliffe as Jason, the teenaged driver who causes the tragedy. The ensemble included Julia Butler, Mariah Conway, Corina Delerme, Audrey Erickson, Omolade Gbolade, Colette Nourie, Stephen Tan, and Michael Wyatt. All gave inspired performances at both Festival and the MHS open dress rehearsal in Winchester Auditorium on February 26th. The technical crew was led by stage manager Sharon Lui and assistant stage manager Maddie Scott, and included Matt O’Sullivan on lighting, Olivia Sidoti on sound, and a construction/shift crew consisting of Gustavo Arnal, Anne Marie Grudem, Phil Janvier, Katrina Ramkissoon, Javana Samuels, Connor Roche, and Christian Urbino. Drama advisors Sheila Walsh and Eileen Mullen accompanied the troupe to Tewksbury, where all enjoyed a day of fine high school drama and connected with students and directors from competing schools. Milton last made it to semi-finals in 2012 and, with a young but seasoned acting troupe, has high hopes for next year’s Festival. A Spring show of one-acts is also in the works – please watch for upcoming details!

MHS Student Named Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program

The following post first appeared in Superintendent Gormley's February 28th E-blast:

Congratulations to Milton High School senior Jack Caljouw, who has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  This honor is based on scores from the 2012 PSAT. Less than one percent of those who took the PSATs qualified as Finalists. Jack will now be considered for one of 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, collectively worth nearly $35 million, for academically talented students.
Jack is an outstanding student who takes AP courses and is an integral part of the Milton High Debate Team. He was presented his Certificate of Merit by Milton High School Principal James Jette during school earlier this week. We are very proud of Jack’s accomplishment.
