PSAT for Grades 10 & 11 on Wednesday, October 16

IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING SCHOOL ON

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, Milton High School will be administering the PSAT to all 10th and 11th graders. While this opportunity is a great benefit for our sophomores and juniors, it creates some logistical issues. In order to provide a quiet test-taking environment and appropriate proctoring, it is necessary to create a unique schedule for 9th and 12th graders on October 16th. Please make a note of the following:

Students in grades 10 and 11 will start school at the regular time of 7:50 a.m. and report to their grade level homeroom. When the testing is over students will resume their normal schedule for the rest of the day. Students must be on time for the test.  Once the test starts no one can be admitted to the testing.

Students in grades 9 and 12 will start school at 11:15 a.m. by going to their 5th period class. If a student has first lunch then he/she will go to lunch and then go to his/her 5th period class. There will be no block day on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Please remember student athletes must be in attendance for the designated amount of time to be eligible to participate in a practice or game.

Buses on this day will run on the regular schedule. We realize that this may create a timing issue for freshmen and seniors who may take the bus. If it is not possible to arrange alternative transportation on this day, students may spend time in the morning in the cafeteria.

MHS Sophomore Honored at Massachusetts Senate Chamber

Ariana Ferrante (sophomore) was welcomed in the Senate Chamber during the first week of October by Senator Brian A. Joyce and Representative Dan Cullinane.  She was being honored for her summer internship as a State House tour guide.  Ariana had to complete an application and interview process as well as pass a written test before being accepted as a tour guide.  The program provides high school students an outstanding opportunity to improve their knowledge and foster interests in history and government, to meet many different kinds of people as well as improve public speaking skills.  Additionally, Ariana was able to complete nearly 100 hours of community service in this capacity as well as learn to navigate the T in and out of the city by herself.

Congratulations, Ariana!

Debate Team News

Originally posted in Superintendent Gormley's October 1, 2013 Eblast:
Our Milton High Debate Team recently traveled to New Haven, Connecticut to take part in a national debate competition and two of our teams advanced to semi-final rounds. Milton High School Debate coaches Nancy Warn and Nick Fitzgerald brought four pairs of debaters to the Yale Invitational tournament:  Katrina Kourtelidis & Tess Deaibes; Olivia Erickson & Anna Lamb; Chris Ricciuti & Jack Caljouw; and Cormac Conners & Chris Dsida.
For the first time ever, Milton High had two teams advance to post rounds at this tournament. There were 480 students competing and four Milton High students — Chris Ricciuti & Jack Caljouw, Cormac Conners & Chris Dsida – all advanced. In addition to the two Milton High teams placing, debaters Chris Ricciuti and Jack Caljouw were ranked in the top 20 at the tournament for speaker points, from a field of 480 students.
The students competed Friday night and all day Saturday as part of the competition. Coaches Warn and Fitzgerald said that all of these students took time out of their summer schedules to begin research and preparations for this tournament, and also attended evening practices from the start of September. The topic for the debate was: Resolved: Unilateral military force by the United States is justified to prevent nuclear proliferation.
This was the largest group of debaters Milton High School has taken to the Yale Invitational and the first time Milton High students have advanced at a national collegiate tournament. More than 240 public forum debaters from across the nation participated in the annual event. Ms. Warn said she would also like to thank Mike Dsida and Mike Ricciuti for sharing the chaperone responsibilities, as well as for judging rounds on Friday night and Saturday.
The Yale Invitational is an annual debate tournament hosted by the Yale Debate Association, an undergraduate debating society at Yale University.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Originally posted in Superintendent Gormley's October 1, 2013 Eblast:

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently  announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. We are pleased to report that two of Milton High School’s students have been named Semifinalists: Jack Caljouw and Bocar Zilla-Ba.  Congratulations to both students!  These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring.
This scholarship is based on scores from the 2012 PSAT. Less than 1% of those who took the PSATs qualified as Semifinalists.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Good luck to both Jack and Bocar in this next phase.
