A Relay For Life event will be held at Milton High School on Saturday, May 18, in the Copeland Field House. The event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and hopes to raise funds for cancer research. Since it is the first year Milton is hosting the event, it will not be an overnight event - it will take place from 2 to 9 p.m.
Relay For Life is both a meaningful and a fun event. The day begins with a ceremony in which people who are currently battling cancer, or who survived cancer, are recognized by everybody else as they walk around the track. Next, people who are caregivers are recognized by the community as they walk around the track. Then, the relay officially begins as one representative from each team is walking for the rest of the day symbolizing the vigilant and tireless efforts we all put in to end cancer! The event also has on-site fundraising in which teams can face-paint, sell baked goods, host a number of events at their designated areas, and so much more! The event will finish with a very somber "luminaria" ceremony, as participant decorated bags are placed around the track, the lights are dimmed, and tea-lights will be placed in the bags to light up the room and the relay with the memories of those who have lost the battle with cancer.
