Mock Trial Team

The Milton High School Mock Trial Team is participating this year in the Statewide High School Mock Trial Tournament, which will take place in January and February of 2013.  The tournament is sponsored by the law firm Brown Rudnick in association with the Massachusetts Bar Association.  Our high school team, under the leadership of newly elected Captains Mittou Metayer and Sharon Lui, are currently investigating a “murder case” in which a woman was allegedly poisoned by a family member for her extensive fortune.  The students are working diligently to prepare opening statements, direct and cross examination of witnesses, closing arguments, and studying witness affidavits and exhibits to prepare for their first competition against Newton Country Day School.  The team will also be competing against Newton South High School and Belmont High School.  Good luck to the team, and many thanks to high school team advisor Mike Matisoff, and attorney coach volunteers Pierre Monette and Michael Chinman.

MHS Debate Team Competition News

The Milton High School Debate team recently competed in the Lincoln Sudbury Speech and Debate Tournament. This was the second consecutive weekend our students dedicated their time to competing in public forum debate, since they also attended the Dighton-Rehoboth tournament.  At Lincoln-Sudbury, within public forum debate alone, there were 89 teams (178 students) competing. Throughout the day, our students debated the resolution: The United States should prioritize tax increases over spending cuts. Milton High had a strong showing, with 23 students participating.  Although all of our students were successful in at least one round, Ailsa Jeffries and Chris Dsida went 3 and 1 for the four regular rounds; winning many compliments from their judges. In addition, the pair of Cormac Conners and Isabelle Smith won all four of their regular rounds, making it to the final rounds of the tournament (along with 7 other teams). Although they lost in their final round, they came in 6th place overall for the day, edging out some incredible competition. Cormac was also able to secure 10th place individually, for speaker points.
We are grateful to Debate Team Coaches Nick Fitzgerald and Nancy Warn, as well as parents Mike Dsida, Lisa Rebrovic, Mike Caljouw and Rob Shepard. The Debate team's next tournament is at Newton South on January 12th.

Joe Marinilli was one of 22 trumpet players accepted to the Boston Crusaders Drum Corps. Over 200 students age 16-21 auditioned at Boston, Florida and Texas locations over two weekends in early December for a spot in the world class drum corps. Ten students from MHS were selected by audition to perform in the 2013 Massachusetts All State Music Festival.  They auditioned on Saturday, December 15th, at Shrewsbury High School, competing against students from all across Massachusetts.  The festival will take place the last weekend of February  (which is also the first weekend of March).  The culminating performance will be at Boston's Symphony Hall.

Nearly 5,000 students and teachers from across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island came together to attend this one-day program.  We were proud to have such a wonderful group of Milton students to represent our schools.

School-to-Careers Partnership: Go to School Day

On Tuesday, December 4th, Milton High welcomed members of the business and legislative community to meet our students, hear from our teachers, and experience firsthand the quality of our school during the School-to-Careers Partnership Go to School Day.  The following guests were invited to spend the morning at the high school:

  • Attorney Sabina Herlihy, Principal
  • Mr. Milan Hermida, TD Bank
  • Senator Brian Joyce
  • Ms. Becky Klayman, South Shore Hospital
  • Mr. Gary Sozzi, GT Reilly Accounting Associates

Here is some feedback from our guests:
"What a wonderful opportunity to see what is being taught in our high schools today, especially the integration of real life experiences into the curriculum."

"Everyone in all of the classes was very welcoming.  The program is well run and it is a valuable experience for students to interact with people in the workforce."

MHS Student Selected for All Eastern Division Chorus

Milton High student, Andrew Mowe, has been selected to be in the All Eastern Division Chorus. He is only the fifth student from MHS in the past 30+ years to be selected for All Eastern. Eastern Division includes Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, American schools in Europe, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. His selection is based on his outstanding score at last year's Massachusetts All State audition.

Andrew is so deserving of this great honor. He is very hard working, dedicated, enthusiastic, and a strong leader. He is Co-President of the MHS Chorus. He belongs to four after/before school MHS singing groups--Do-Re-Migos, the Gospel Choir, the Milton Afterschool Singers, and the MHS Carolers. He had a leading role in the musicals Footloose and Hairspray. He is very humble and down to earth - a great team player through and through.

The festival will be held in Hartford, CT in April. Bravo to Andrew!

Foods I Students Use the Supertracker Website

Here is a post from Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, Elaine Lovett:

Although the months of November, December and early January may not be the best time to look into this website, try to be brave!  Foods I students recently completed assignments using the United States Department of Agriculture's great new website, Supertracker.  The website was opened in July of 2012 to help all of us get a better handle on our diet, caloric needs, exercise and activity levels.  The site is  You can create a personal profile with your age, gender, approximate height and weight.  After that, you can keep track of daily calories with a food diary, calories burned from exercise, an online coach, etc.  It's definitely worth the time to learn more about a healthier you!

Future Hospitality Leaders Day

The following post is from Family & Consumer Sciences teacher, Elaine Lovett:

During the first week of November, a group of 24 students from MHS attended the Future Hospitality Leaders Day at Newbury College in Brookline.  Milton students joined others from Canton, Avon, Waltham, Madison Park, and Blue Hills at this most worthwhile meeting.  Students learned about the wide variety of careers in the hospitality industry, from hotels to restaurants, clubs, resorts, functions, athletic venues and other facilities.  The keynote speaker, Hillary Baumann, is the Human Resource Director at Fenway Park for ARAMark.  She explained some of the opportunities that are available in a workplace like Fenway.  Students also met in round table discussions with sales and marketing executives, concierge managers, club managers, restaurant managers, hotel general managers, etc.  A tour of Newbury College was included in the Leadership conference.  Students were also treated to a continental breakfast as well as a sit down luncheon prepared and served by the Newbury Culinary Arts students.

Latin IV Students Perform One-Act Plays for Tucker 5th Graders

From Brendan Hunt, Latin IV Student (Mr. Webb),

Latin IV students at Milton High School will be travelling to Tucker Elementary School in Milton to put on several one act plays for the fifth grade classes.  These one act plays derive from fables written by the ancient poet Phaedrus.  By putting these plays on for the fifth grade classes, we hope to broaden their knowledge of fables greatly.  We plan to give them a chance to work with high school students to make connections between Latin fables and English fables, which they too have just finished studying.  These plays will include costumes, backgrounds, and have auditory features.  We would like to extend an invitation to you to join us at Tucker School on November 8th, from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

PSAT for Grades 10 & 11 on October 17th

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

On Wednesday, October 17, 2012, Milton High School will be administering the PSAT to all 10th and 11th graders. While this opportunity is a great benefit for our sophomores and juniors, it creates some logistical issues. In order to provide a quiet test-taking environment and appropriate proctoring, it is necessary to create a unique schedule for 9th and 12th graders on October 17th. Please make a note of the following:

Students in grades 10 and 11 will start school at the regular time of 7:50 a.m. and report to their grade level homeroom. When the testing is over students will resume their normal schedule for the rest of the day. Students must be on time for the test.  Once the test starts no one can be admitted to the testing.

Students in grades 9 and 12 will start school at 11:15 a.m. by going to their 5th period class. If a student has first lunch then he/she will go to lunch and then go to his/her 5th period class. There will be no block day on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Please remember student athletes must be in attendance for the designated amount of time to be eligible to participate in a practice or game.

Buses on this day will run on the regular schedule. We realize that this may create a timing issue for freshmen and seniors who may take the bus. If it is not possible to arrange alternative transportation on this day, students may spend time in the morning in the cafeteria.

MHS Boosters "Swing for Sports 2012" Fundraiser

The Milton High School Boosters will hold their annual golf and tennis tournament, "Swing for Sports", on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the Wollaston Golf Club.  All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the athletes of MHS.  Please see the flyer below for more information.

Former Boston Celtic, Chris Herren, to Speak at MHS

Former Boston Celtic and local high school basketball star Chris Herren will provide two anti-substance abuse presentations to Milton High School students and members of the community on October 18th and 19th. The community presentation will take place at a town-meeting style event on Thursday, October 18th at 7 pm in the Charles C. Winchester Auditorium and the student presentation will take place Friday, October 19th at 9am in the Copeland Field House. The presentations will last approximately one hour and will include a Question and Answer session.

Herren, who played against Milton High School when he was a member of the Durfee High School Hilltoppers from Fall River, will detail his rise and fall as a basketball player and the struggles with substance abuse that derailed his career and nearly killed him. His story is well known and was recently the subject of the Emmy winning ESPN documentary, Unguarded.

Prior to that, Herren was the subject of two books, Fall River Dreams and Basketball Junkie, both written by Bill Reynolds, a renowned author and sportswriter for the Providence Journal Bulletin. Herren addresses audiences all over the country and has spoken at West Point, The University of Florida, The University of Rhode Island, Northeastern University, Salve Regina, Curry College and over 30 public schools.

The student presentation is sponsored by the Milton Foundation for Education, The Milton High School Boosters, and the Milton Public Schools.

The town-meeting style presentation is being sponsored by The Milton Board of Health, the Youth Counselor Emeritus, and the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Further information regarding Chris Herren and his presentations can be found at his website,

On Friday, September 28th, Milton High School participated in their annual Japanese Exchange Program. Milton's students and staff welcomed Principal Junko Tanaka, 303 students, 13 teachers, and other adults from Sakae Higashi High School in Japan into the building for the visit. The day consisted of an assembly, which included performances by the MHS Marching Band and the Sakae Higashi Cheerleaders, and student shadowing for the remainder of the day. There were a lot of smiles and conversations between the Japanese students, our student ambassadors and other students from the general population. Thank you to teacher Ms. Kelley and MPS parent Steve Shapiro for organizing and planning the event.
